How to Enroll

DSCN2883Oakland Unified has announced that its 2009-2010 enrollment process will run from December 7, 2009 to January 15, 2010.

If you are interested in visiting Peralta, parent volunteers will begin giving tours twice a week, from 9 to 10 a.m., beginning on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Please call Peralta Secretary Hellen Richardson at 879-1450 to reserve a space. For a list of tour dates, Click here. Prospective families are also invited to attend our informational Open House, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, December 3. Both prospective kindergarten families and those seeking to transfer are encouraged to attend.

Oakland Unified’s Student Assignement & Bilingual Testing Office assigns students to schools in three ways: Through siblings, by neighborhood, and through an “options” process that allows families to choose a school outside of their neighborhood.

Siblings of current students are given the first priority for enrollment, followed by children who live within the attendance zone. The next priority goes to students whose neighborhood school has designated “program improvement” status. Remaining spaces are then assigned to other students requesting Peralta. See the OUSD website for more details.

Peralta is a small school and has become popular in the neighborhood, but a large number of our new students every year still come from outside the official attendance zone. We have occasional openings in the upper grades. Peralta welcomes all families — come check us out!

To begin the enrollment process, check OUSD’s School Finder to see whether you live in the attendance zone that Peralta shares with Sankofa Academy, or to find out about your neighborhood school (be sure to give your local school a look – there are lots of great schools in Oakland!).
