How do I get my child into Peralta?

The first priorities for school assignments go to siblings of Peralta students and to children who live in Peralta’s attendance area (check OUSD’s School Finder). If you live outside this area, you will have to go through OUSD’s options process, which begins in December 2009. Tours for prospective families will be held twice weekly from 9 to 10 a.m. beginning on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Prospective families are invited to an information night from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on December 3. Click here to learn more.

How big is Peralta?

Peralta is a small school, but with nearly 300 children, we are at maximum capacity for our campus. There are about two classes for each grade level, with a few mixed-grade classes for more flexibility.

When does the bell ring?

School begins at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, August 31, 2009.  Dismissal is at 2:45 pm except on Wednesdays, when the final bell rings at 1:25 pm. Be on time — tardiness disrupts other students’ lessons! Children can be dropped off at 8:20 for supervised play.

Check the calendar for the holiday and minimum day schedules.

How do I find out who my child’s teacher will be?

Principal Rosette Costello will post class lists by the 63rd Street entrance after 6 p.m. on Sunday, August 30. She will listen to parents’ requests before then, but has many factors to consider when assigning classes and will not make changes after posting classes.

Luckily, there are no bad assignments at Peralta.

How do I sign up for before- and after-school care?

There are three options:

  • CDC (Child Development Center): A free, income-based OUSD program that runs from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. year round. Contact Ms. Dee at 510-879-0837 to apply.
  • Rainbow City: A fee-based program blended with CDC and covering some holidays and breaks. Schedule is as-needed. Contact Lottie Lynch at 510-599-4803 with questions or to enroll.
  • PASEP (Peralta After-School Enrichment Program): Offers a range of free classes (dance, gardening, tennis, cooking, etc) until 6 p.m. All students may apply, with full-time (five day) attendance encouraged. Enrollment packages will be distributed on the first day of school, with classes beginning on September 9. Program administered by Aspiranet.

How can I get to know the Peralta Community?

Come to Peralta events! Peralta in Bloom (Springfest) is a fantastically fun affair in the spring. And the monthly Garden Work Days are a great place to meet people. Check the calendar for details.

How do I join the Peralta Parent Teacher Group (PPTG)?

If you are part of a Peralta family, you are already a member! Parents, caregivers, and school staff are all welcome, and no dues are required. Meetings are the first Wednesday of most months. There are also Saturday meetings. (Check the calendar.)  Childcare is provided.
