How to Enroll

Peralta Elementary is part of the Oakland Unified School District system, please refer to the OUSD site for the most up to date information.

OUSD's "Options Enrollment" period is from early December to late January.  OUSD will release updated information in mid-October, which will be reflected on this site.

How old should my child be?

California recently passed a new law, “The Kindergarten Readiness Act” (SB 1381), that changes the age when children are eligible to enter Kindergarten.  Under this new law children must turn 5 years old on or before September 1 in order to enroll in traditional Kindergarten.

For the 2014-2015 school year, parents of students who turn 5 between October 2 and December 2, 2013 have priority to choose to register their children for Transitional Kindergarten. Children with earlier birthdays may attend Transitional Kindergarten once all children with November, October, and September fifth birthdays are served. Transitional Kindergarten is part of the public school system and is free to participating students.

Assignment Letters (by mid-March)

By the middle of March you should receive a letter specifying your child's school assignment, hopefully Peralta.  According to OUSD, in 2014, 82% of kindergarten applicants received their first choice of school.  If you did not receive your choice, the initial appeal window for OUSD assignments occurs in late March; with mandatory registration in April.
