Kindergarten Open House and Tours

Oakland Unified’s 2012-2013 enrollment period runs from December 5, 2011 to January 20, 2012. If you are interested in enrolling your child at Peralta, please attend one of our tours and our Kindergarten Open House, Wednesday, November 30, 2011 from 6:30-8:00PM (new date!). Come meet our principal and Kindergarten teachers, and learn more about Peralta. (Childcare is not provided, please make alternate arrangements.)

Parent volunteers will give weekly tours November through January. Please contact Peralta Secretary Cathy Wong at (510) 879-1450 to sign up for one of these tours.

Oakland Unified School District is also hosting an Options Help Night on Thursday, December 1, from 6:00–7:30PM at Garfield Elementary School, 1640 22nd Ave, Oakland CA 94606. This will be a great opportunity to acquaint yourself to the many aspects of the enrollment process.

OUSD Calendar Update

The Oakland Unified School District has amended the previously published 2011-2012 district calendar as follows:

* Monday, Jan. 2, 2012 has been designated as a New Year’s Day Holiday, so following the winter break, classes will resume on Jan. 3, 2012.

* An extra day has been added to the end of the school year, so the last day of school will be Friday, June 15, 2012, not Thursday, June 14 as previously announced.

Tuesday: Dress-alike (for those who missed it Monday) and Do Good Deeds Day (more than usual!)

Wednesday: Wacky Wednesday—stripes, plaid, florals, wear anything!

Thursday: Hat Day

Friday: Pajama/Stuffed Animal Day

Don’t forget the Instrumental Music Assembly at 9 a.m. Friday, and the Peralta Talent Show at 6 p.m.!

Don’t forget that this week is a “minimum” one! School lets out at 1:25 p.m. every day, to give teachers time to plan for conferences. The P.E.A.C.E. after-school program is open every day.

And heads up: Cesar Chavez’s birthday falls on Thursday, March 24. School will be closed on Thursday, but open on Friday.

Back-to-School Night: Thursday, Sept. 16th, 6:30 to 7:45

All parents and caregivers are encouraged to attend Back-to-School Night, where you will meet your childrenâ€™s teacher/s and hear about expectations for the year. Teachers use this night to give families the information they need to support their children, so please plan to have at least one adult from your family attend.

Childcare for this event is extremely limited, so please make every effort to arrange for care outside of school. Childcare will be available for those who canâ€™t make other arrangements (in other words, donâ€™t let childcare stop you from coming!).

First Week Schedule: Welcome Back!

As usual, the first week of school will be a busy one. Please note there will be minimum days all week, with school dismissed at 1:25 p.m. The P.E.A.C.E.Â program will be open during the first week, offering care from 7:30 a.m. before school through 6 p.m. after school beginning on the first day. Sunday, Aug. 29: Class lists posted outside the office, 5 p.m.

Monday, Aug. 30: First day of school, 8:30 a.m.

Wednesday, Sept. 1: Peralta Parent Teacher Group Activities Fair and Meeting. Dinner at 6 p.m. (pizza provided, bring a side dish to share if you like). Meeting at 6:30. Come learn about fun ways you can help at Peralta this year. All families are required to pitch in.

Monday, Sept. 6: Labor Day. No school!

Tuesday, Sept. 7: Full-day schedule begins. School runs from 8:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. every day except Wednesdays, which are minimum days with 1:25 p.m. dismissal. Please check the full calendar for additional minimum days throughout the year.

Get Ready for School, Get Our School Ready!

Many hands are still needed to get campus in shape for opening day.

We need help with:

Friday, August 27, 9am-5pm: Teachers will be at Peralta, prepping their rooms. Among the tasks (but not limited to these):

Sonia needs help putting the library together; kids can help!
Linda Hughes is looking for tennis balls (new or old) for classroom chair legs and someone to put them install them.

Thursday/Friday, August 27-28 (day or evening): Misc. jobs around school (please see/call Rosette or Paul in the office to help):

Remove staples from the exterior walls
Dana street entrance: Staple removal, posting, water pressure clean entrance and walls
Multi-purpose room: Remove pictures from exterior wall and 63rd St. wall
Hang a large whiteboard on the wall in Classroom 10 (room directly to your right as you enter off of Dana St)
Install a projector mount in Portable E, Ms. Hughes classroom (bring an electric drill/screwdriver)
Saturday, August 28: Friday folder stuffing will take place in the teachers’ lunch room. More hands make for light work! The time for this hasn’t been set yet; please contact Alison Wellsfry (wellsfry36 AT yahoo DOT com) for more info.
