Oakland teachers have planned a one-day strike on Thursday, April 29 to protest Oakland Unified’s decision to end negotiations and impose a contract on them. School will be open but classrooms will be staffed by emergency, non-union substitutes. Peralta teachers will be picketing outside the school.

The California Department of Education announced this week what we already know: Peralta is one of the most “distinguished” schools in the California. Peralta joins three other Oakland public schools—Chabot, Montclair, and Thornhill Elementary—in receiving the award.

Last summer, Peralta first-grade teacher Pam Lucker and artist-in-residence Trena Noval spent ten days in an intensive workshop at Harvard University’s Project Zero. Their participation was part of Peralta’s ongoing partnership with the Harvard Graduate School of Education program, which seeks to “understand and enhance learning, thinking, and creativity in the arts.”
