Meet in the MPR
Back to School Night is our opportunity to go into our children’s classrooms, meet the teachers and other parents, and really learn about what your kids will be doing for the coming year. The teacher will give you a wealth of information that is not to be missed!
Please meet at 6:30 in the MPR, where we will be screening some of the movies the children have made. You will then adjourn to your child’s classroom for the low-down on the 2011-2012 year.
Remember, this is an adult only event. We encourage you to find childcare if you can. If you are not able, there will be *limited* childcare on-site. Please don’t miss the event because you can’t find someone to watch your children!
We are excited to announce that this year Roots & Shoots Photography will be taking our student portraits and class pictures! The picture days are as follows:
Tuesday, September 27th: Kinder & 1st grades
Wednesday, September 28st: 2nd & 3rd grades
Thursday, September 29th: 4th & 5th grades
There will be two ways to order your pictures:
Paper forms: These will be available for pick up in the school office starting on Monday, September 19th. These order forms along with payment will be due back to the school no later than September 27th. There will be a drop box in the office if you want to turn them in early. NOTE: There will be no proofs available with this option.
Online ordering: All student pictures will be posted online this year using the Roots & Shoots password protected ordering website. Three weeks after Picture Day (approximately 10/21), you will receive information from Roots & Shoots letting you know when and how you can view and order your student’s photographs.
ABOUT ROOTS & SHOOTS PHOTOGRAPHY
Roots & Shoots Photography was started by Nikki Levine and Cheri Hudnut, two Berkeley based professional photographers. They seek to change the old model of stale class pictures by providing parents with refreshing, high quality photographs of their children that truly capture their authentic character. They also help raise money for the school by donating a portion of their proceeds towards a student garden or special project. You can see more of their work at www.roots-shoots.com. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact them directly at grow@roots-shoots.com.
This year, our wonderful Second Step program instructor, Susan Killebrew, has created a blog. In this blog, you will find information and resources related to Peralta’s Second Step program, as well as regular updates with highlights of Second Step instruction each week. This will be a very useful tool for parents that will help you support your child’s emotional and social development at school and at home.
The Oakland Unified School District has amended the previously published 2011-2012 district calendar as follows:
* Monday, Jan. 2, 2012 has been designated as a New Year’s Day Holiday, so following the winter break, classes will resume on Jan. 3, 2012.
* An extra day has been added to the end of the school year, so the last day of school will be Friday, June 15, 2012, not Thursday, June 14 as previously announced.
The campaign to save Peralta’s art program is off to a strong start!
As we face major budget cuts, including the loss of a teacher and larger class sizes, Peralta’s art program is more crucial than ever to keep students engaged and support our teachers. We have just 69 days to fill the $45,000 funding gap in our art program. The goal for the web campaign is $15,000. Help us spread the word by sharing it with all your friends and contacts on Facebook, Twitter, and old-fashioned email. Nonline folks are also welcome to send checks (contact Hae Yuon Kim at hae AT tobidesigns DOT com).
In addition to the web campaign, Art in Our Heart includes an art auction planned for August and a major donor campaign. Stay tuned for updates! See more student projects.

The 6th Annual Grandparent Get-together and Luncheon is scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday in the Multipurpose Room.
All Peralta grandparents are invited to attend this wonderful event, organized by Family Liaison Yvonne Myers.
There will be certificates for the oldest and the youngest grandparent, the person with the most grandchildren, and the grandparent who traveled the longest distance (so remember to invite out-of-town grandparents!). Bring photos to share.
Please call Ms. Myers with questions at 654-7977. Also let her know if you are available to take photos or help in any other way.
It’s actually true. Rain not only improves gardens, but gardening! Weeds are much easier to pull from soft, moist soil than sun-hardened dirt. And there’s plenty of ‘em to pull!
So don’t let a little moisture stop you from joining the last Garden Work Day of the school year. We need all hands to spruce up the garden before summer. Come for an hour or stay all morning. Bring your clippers. And make sure to come early for the Cole coffee and pastries.
