Help Wanted
Last updated: October 29, 2009
The school community is looking for volunteers in the following roles:
Room parents
Produce Stand Seller
Salad Bar
Peralta Times
Room Parents (need 2 per class)
Intermittent needs, not structured
One of the best ways you can support your child’s immediate learning environment is by helping his or her teacher coordinate within the classroom. In this role, you are helping the teacher as well as the PPTG. Responsibilities vary from classroom to classroom, but typically center on being a point person for the teacher. Examples of instances might include: gathering phone numbers & email lists of classmates, helping to get Friday folders back, mobilizing volunteers for field trips, making a wish list of supplies, etc.
This is a good role for someone who likes to be in touch with the teacher and the classroom. It involves some checking in with teachers (usually before or after school) and occasional follow up with fellow class families. Contact Jen Werner (see roster).
Produce Stand – Seller (need 1)
Tuesday afternoons 2:45 pm ( 2 hours or so)
The Produce Stand at Peralta was set up with the assistance of UC Cooperative Extension staff to promote independent locally grown organic foods. In past years, a team of four volunteers have been able to run this program. The produce stand’s presence on the playground at pickup time on Tuesdays is a bright spot in the school week. Many families and staff do a portion of their vegetable shopping there — plus they learn about what is in season.
This is a great position for someone who likes to be outside and interact with people. Contact Tresca Behling for info (see roster).
Salad Bar Volunteers (need 10)
Weekdays, approximately 10:30 am to 12:30 pm.
Children have a special chance to eat healthy foods at Peralta. Thanks to the pioneering efforts of parents in past years, we now have a salad bar to supplement the (processed food) lunches provided. A minimal level of ongoing supervision during lunch periods is required to sustain the program. Teaching kids to eat healthy young prevents obesity, and all kinds of bad habits.
This is a great volunteering opportunity if you have free time during school hours, volunteer in K classrooms, and care about food and nutrition. Note: This occurs during school hours. Contact Rose Molloy for info (see roster).
Peralta Times Staffer (need 2)
Unstructured hours
The Peralta Times is a paper-based publication with news and feature articles on the people and programs that make the Peralta Community so special. The newsletter is a longstanding fixture at Peralta, and a great way to build our community. If you want to write an article, report on a program, share your child’s artwork or poetry, or conduct an interview for the rest of us to read—this is where it will go.
This is a great opportunity for verbal-creative types who aren’t able to volunteer on the campus itself. This newsletter has the effect of tying all the grades together and making us share a common view of the school and its values. Contact Jenny Summers or Laura Counts (see roster).
