After-School Programs

Peralta’s After-School Programs
Flexible Options for All Families

There are two comprehensive after-school care programs offered at Peralta, as well as enrichment classes (PASEP) which start early in the school year. Parents who need full-time or part-time care starting from the first day should make arrangements with either Rainbow City or CDC (Child Development Center).

While Rainbow City and CDC are administered separately, the Peralta community has worked hard to blend them into one program – in the same space and with the same activities. The difference is that CDC is a free program for those who qualify based on income. It offers full-time, year-round coverage – even during the summer and vacation weeks.

Rainbow is a private, fee-based program with flexible full- or part-time options, and only offers occasional vacation coverage.

Peralta is thus able to provide an “extended family” of sorts, offering care after school every day until 6:00 pm. If minimum enrollment requirements are met, before-school care is also offered every day from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m.

After-school activities are student-directed and staff supervised. Outdoor activities include basketball, wall ball, jump rope and free play. Indoor activities include reading, arts & crafts, board games, puzzles, building blocks, and more. There is a special time dedicated daily to homework and snacks. A high percentage of the after-school care students are kindergartners whose special needs are specifically addressed by program staff. A designated area, quiet times, smaller group activities and greater teacher supervision is provided for these new and youngest members of the Peralta community.

PASEP (Peralta After-School Enrichment Program)

PASEP offers a wide range of enrichment classes five days per week until 6 p.m. This is a great option for families who have alternative care – either through one of the other programs or elsewhere – during the weeks PASEP does not offer classes.

Funding for the PASEP program comes from the Oakland Fund for Children & Youth (OFCY), and all classes are free. Spaces are limited during these tight budget times, and children are encouraged to attend five days per week. The program is administered through Aspiranet, a nonprofit agency.

Classes may include cartooning, drama, hip-hop dance, origami, gardening, tennis, and more. Every day also includes dedicated time for homework, snack and free play. Sign-up forms will be distributed on the first day of school. Classes will be posted on Tuesday, September 8 and will begin on Wednesday, September 9.

NOTE: CDC and Rainbow City students may continue to attend those program on days when they are not in the enrichment classes. Rainbow City only bills for days actually spent in after-school care.
