Many, many, many thanks to tireless organizers Heather Grillmeyer and Nicole Aruda, and the large crews they recruited to keep this tradition going, and keep it a success. And thanks to the Claremont parents to joined in to help at the event, which benefitted both schools. The bakesale and Guerilla Grub truck were definite bonuses.

Dear Peralta Community,

I don’t know about you, but I can’t stop humming those words from the 5th graders’ performance of the Mosaic Project song or visualizing those kids with their fists in the air singing in Spanish about working for peace. Los ninos are ‘el futuro’. Those kids give me hope for the future, and they inspire me now. I am proud of them, and I’m proud of us all for taking some time out from our jobs, our worries, our commitments, and yes, even our passion for soccer to come together in the place where we live. (“oh oh oh oh”)

I want to send a multi-lingual thank you to the whole community for making the Diversity-Unity Committee’s 2010 Diversity Dinner such a multi-sensory, multi-cultural, multi-generational success. As was the case last year, I found that one language does not express sufficiently the gratitude I feel and the thanks that are in order. So….

Gracias to all those who attended Saturday’s dinner with good spirits and good appetites.

Arigato to those who brought dishes from their heritage, their family cookbooks, or their favorite take out spots.

Xie xie to those of you who shared your bounty even further by dropping canned goods in the food drive bins and/or who signed up for the meal train.

Shukran to those of you who haven’t yet but will participate in the meal train and food drive over the next few days.

Danke to the dozens of volunteers who helped set up, welcome, serve, guard, craft and clean.

Toda to those who donated or acquired donations of furniture, heat lamps, or coffee (or all of the above ala Sonia Perez )

Merci to Rosette and Paul who allowed and enabled us to transform the school site into a night cafe/club/wall ball court.

TYSVM to DJ DelicaTess’n aka Tess Unger for taking requests and serving up the platters.

Salamat to the Diversity-Unity Committee and the dinner sub-committee (see below), many of whom put in countless hours of prep work to create such a special night.

Mahalo to the entire Peralta community. I am truly grateful to be part of such a diverse community united in our desire to give all our children the best education possible and in so doing enrich our lives all the more.

I hope you are inspired to seek out more of what the Diversity/Unity Committee does to come together in this place we share. Stay tuned for more community building, advocacy, and education!

Beginning in Fall 2010, Peralta will offer one after-school program with a range of options for all families. The good news is that the provider, Aspiranet, already runs the PASEP after-school enrichment programs and has a staff familiar with our school. They will also be running the after-care program for summer school.

More details and registration forms will go home in the next week, and will be posted on this site. Here are a few details:

All students are welcome to take part in the program consisting of childcare, homework time, enrichment, activities and play time.
It is a sliding scale program with fees based on family income.
The program will run after school from the end of the school day until 6pm, Monday-Friday. Morning care will be provided if there is sufficient need.
It will be a year-round program. It will be closed on all major holidays.

Aspiranet would like to know what you would like to see in the program. What is most important to you? Homework time? Playtime? Enrichment classes? What kind of enrichment classes, playtime, etc?

Please write any suggestions/ideas and put them in the envelope marked PASEP SUGGESTIONS 2010-2011 in the magazine rack next to the main office. Thank you in advanced for your part in helping to create a great after-care program for next year.

A fun event you won’t want to miss!

Teachers will open their classrooms, children will get to show off some of the work they’ve been doing, and the younger kids will sing their hearts out this Thursday at the Spring Open House. The evening is also a chance to meet the teachers in the next grade up.

One of the highlights of the evening is the spring concert. Children in grades K-3 will perform songs under the direction of music teacher Bonnie Lockhart. The concert begins at 6:45 pm, sharp. Kindergarten through 3rd-grade children and families should come to the Multipurpose Room at 6:35 p.m., and students should sit on the floor tapes assigned to their class. Parents and families should find seating behind K-3 students. And it is a joy to see and hear the songs that the children have been working on with Bonnie!

Ralph Cantor, a 3rd-grade parent and Alameda County drug educator and counselor, will give a special presentation before the June 5 PPTG meeting on how to talk with kids about drugs.

The presentation will run from 6 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. (30 minutes earlier than the regular PPTG meeting start time) and will be held in Ana Thomas’ 5th grade classroom. It will be especially helpful for families of children entering middle school, but will also contain useful information for all families.

Ralph is much sought-after by schools, using a rational and believable approach to explain to kids how different parts of the brain respond to drugs, and the differences in how adolescent brains are affected. His suggestions to parents are clear and logical. You will learn new ideas on how to help your kids make good decisions, and what you can do to protect them. As a Peralta parent, Ralph is donating his time. All are encouraged to attend. NOTE: This special presentation is geared toward parents and other caregivers; children will not be present, but care will be provided.

The presentation will be followed immediately by the regular monthly PPTG meeting in the Multipurpose Room. This is the last meeting of the 2009-2010 school year. Dinner and childcare will be provided as usual.

Did you know?

Even if you’re not a joiner, you’re already a member of the PPTG! No signup or dues required. All parents or caregivers with students at Peralta are automatically members.

Peralta is an amazing school due, in part, to its very involved parent community. But EVERYONE’S help is needed, not just a few.

You can join the PPTG’s listserv on Yahoo! and find out what’s happening at Peralta. Go to http://groups.yahoo.com, search for “PeraltaCommunity,” then click “Join the Group.”

The sale required a huge amount of logistical planning before, during, and after. They pulled it off, bringing in a record $5,000 for Peralta programs. So let them know how much you appreciate their efforts (especially since they’ve agreed to do it for one more year!).

The annual sale is a joint effort of the Lower Rockridge Parents Group and the Peralta Parent Teacher Group. Thanks to all who donated, and the dozens of volunteers who helped the day run smoothly. And thanks to all the bakers, as well as bakesale organizers Cinthia Andrus and Kellene Kaiser, for the sweet treats.
