Three Peralta Films to Screen at Festival on Saturday, 12 p.m. May 21st

Peralta students’ art will be showcased at the Albany Film Fest this weekend!

Three short films, all produced by students last year, will be shown in the first hour of the festival. Admission is $5 for adults and just $1 for kids (see location and map below).

Kicking off the festival at noon will be “Things That Spin,” an animation piece by Ms Larsen’s and Ms Hackett’s second graders last year. During that 1st hour there will also be a screening of “Trash Elimination,” created by Ms Ana’s 4/5th graders from last year, and “Land Beneath Our Feet,” a history of the East Bay done in paper cutouts by 1st graders in Ms Lucker’s class last year.

2011 LRPG Yard Sale: Keep up the Spring Cleaning!

The donations for this year’s LRPG Community Yard Sale have been rolling in!

The sale is scheduled for Saturday, April 9, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Peralta playground (on Alcratraz Ave., 1/2 block east of Telegraph). Thanks to all of you who have donated to our community effort to support Peralta Elementary and Claremont Middle School.

We would love to have more items from upper grade elementary school and middle school kids. Do you have stuff your big kid has grown out of? We’d love:

big-kid clothes
sports equipment
bikes
Yu-gi-oh/Pokemon/trading card collections

Please consider donating them to this year’s yard sale! We have tons of little kid stuff, but we know big kids need to shop too!

We will be having another drop off Wednesday March 30, from 10 am to 12 pm. Email Nicole Aruda (nicaruda AT earthlink DOT net) for the secret drop-off location.

The famous Peralta Cakewalk

Peralta’s SPRING FESTIVAL, also known as ”Peralta in Bloom” is coming up on Saturday, May 14, from noon to 4 p.m.

Peralta in Bloom is a time to come together to celebrate our wonderful gardens at Peralta Elementary–and to celebrate the wonderful growth of our students in the course of the year. The Spring Festival includes carnival games, live music, face-painting, crafts, spin-art, a jumpy house, wall-climbing, and many mouth-watering foods and sweets!

We’re sending out an early save the date, to encourage all to bring friends, neighbors, co-workers & of course aunts, uncles, & grandfolk to celebrate the success of our school and community! This year, we’re lucky to feature a real petting zoo with live animals; the opportunity to silk-screen our logo on shirts and aprons, as well as selling a lovely array of new colorful t-shirts designed by Lloyd Dangle!

We’ll also all enjoy traditions like the fabulous cake-walk, live music from ‘The Secret Identities’, karaoke, and much, much more–plus a big raffle!

The theme of this year’s event, SUSTAINABLE FUN, expresses the great resilience of the Peralta community and our responsible stewardship of our gardens, as well as the responsible ways Spring Festival has worked to radically reduce waste–with our own ‘zero-waste monsters’, Lenny Landfill, Rerun and the beautiful Compostina.

We’ll be asking for volunteers to man events at PERALTA IN BLOOM over the coming weeks, starting at the coming April PPTG meeting!

Be Informed/Be Heard on Budget Cuts

There are many opportunities for those of you who are fired up about school budget cuts to learn more, and let your voices be heard.

There are two meetings Saturday, March 26.

The first is a big town hall meeting organized by the Oakland Education Association. Public participation is encouraged.

Speakers include Superintendent Tony Smith, Mayor Jean Quan, California Assemblymembers Sandre Swanson and Nancy Skinner, Alameda County Superintendent Sheila Jordan, and (possibly) State Superintendent Tom Torlakson.

Also on Saturday, the School Board is holding a study session on its asset management plan. They are looking at how much excess property they own, and what to do with it, as they develop their “Thriving Students” strategic plan. Finally, here’s some information on two more important meetings that comes to us from North Oakland School Board Member Jody London:

On Wednesday April 6, 5-8, we will holding a study session on our 2011-2012 budget. In this session we will look at our current school-based budgeting system, proposed central administration expenditures, reduction of non-instructional days, and related issues. This also is critical input for our strategic plan. The meeting will be in the OUSD Board Room, 1025 Second Avenue.

At 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 14, you will have another opportunity to take the Next 10 Budget Challenge in person. The Junior Leagues of Oakland East Bay, San Francisco, and Palo Alto Mid Peninsula will be holding a Next 10 meeting at Claremont Middle School, on College Avenue across from the Rockridge BART station. This is a great way to better understand the state budget process.

After our great Diversity-Unity Dinner shook up our weekends, you’ll all be glad to hear that morning coffee and bagels will be available this Thursday at 8:20 a.m. near the Dana Street entrance. A small donation is encouraged, so don’t forget to bring some change!

All parents and community members are invited to eat near to the Peralta Garden after dropping your kids, but please keep conversation low so as not to disturb the classes. Leftover food will be donated to the after-school programs.

The D-U Dance Party

Dear Peralta Community,

I don’t know about you, but I can’t stop humming those words from the 5th graders’ performance of the Mosaic Project song or visualizing those kids with their fists in the air singing in Spanish about working for peace. Los ninos are ‘el futuro’. Those kids give me hope for the future, and they inspire me now. I am proud of them, and I’m proud of us all for taking some time out from our jobs, our worries, our commitments, and yes, even our passion for soccer to come together in the place where we live. (“oh oh oh oh”)

I want to send a multi-lingual thank you to the whole community for making the Diversity-Unity Committee’s 2010 Diversity Dinner such a multi-sensory, multi-cultural, multi-generational success. As was the case last year, I found that one language does not express sufficiently the gratitude I feel and the thanks that are in order. So….

Gracias to all those who attended Saturday’s dinner with good spirits and good appetites.

Arigato to those who brought dishes from their heritage, their family cookbooks, or their favorite take out spots.

Xie xie to those of you who shared your bounty even further by dropping canned goods in the food drive bins and/or who signed up for the meal train.

Shukran to those of you who haven’t yet but will participate in the meal train and food drive over the next few days.

Danke to the dozens of volunteers who helped set up, welcome, serve, guard, craft and clean.

Toda to those who donated or acquired donations of furniture, heat lamps, or coffee (or all of the above ala Sonia Perez )

Merci to Rosette and Paul who allowed and enabled us to transform the school site into a night cafe/club/wall ball court.

TYSVM to DJ DelicaTess’n aka Tess Unger for taking requests and serving up the platters.

Salamat to the Diversity-Unity Committee and the dinner sub-committee (see below), many of whom put in countless hours of prep work to create such a special night.

Mahalo to the entire Peralta community. I am truly grateful to be part of such a diverse community united in our desire to give all our children the best education possible and in so doing enrich our lives all the more.

I hope you are inspired to seek out more of what the Diversity/Unity Committee does to come together in this place we share. Stay tuned for more community building, advocacy, and education!

Peralta Fund: We Did It!

THANK YOU PERALTA FAMILIES!

As of today,Â 192 families representing 258 Peralta students have pledged or contributed to the Peralta Fund!

That’s a record-breaking 82% of families participating! Schoolwide Ice Cream Party, here we come!

With donations still trickling in, thisÂ year’s Peralta Fund Campaign broke a new record!

This was a community effort.
Thanks to all Peralta families.
Every family gives as much time, money, and love to Peralta as they can.

And thanks to:
All the classroom parents who encouraged families to participate.
All the parents who wrote emails or helped on Back-to-School night.
