The school has a unique and proud tradition of family involvement and activism that stretches back to the 1800s. We celebrate our diverse population and we work hard to build a strong community. In 2006, Peralta was one of only six schools in California where African-American students scored an API that exceeded 800 on the state STAR . . . → Read More: Welcome back to Peralta!

The following news is excerpted from The Peralta Broadcast, an e-newsletter produced weekly by parent Debbie French. It is updated weekly.

The Peralta Fund Needs YOU — More Than Ever!

If you’ve been thinking about donating to the Peralta Fund, but haven’t quite gotten around to it, now is the time.

Your children look forward to the wonderful classroom enrichment programs that the Peralta Fund supports — Coach Antoine’s games and sports, Bonnie’s songs, espanol with Ms. Susan, garden maintenance, and more. Kindergarten aides help the youngest students adjust to school, and mental health counselors support those who need help. Unfortunately, school budgets no longer pay for these “extras” (which most of us consider essentials). If we all work together — giving at whatever level we can — we can continue to support the programs that make our kids want to come to school!

A big THANK YOU to the families of the students who have already contributed or pledged to contribute to the Peralta Fund. We are three-quarters of the way to our goal of having the families of 200 Peralta students participating. Which classrooms will get to 75% and win a classroom ice cream party first? If the past serves as a guide, all of them will — if you help!

Get those pledges in!

It is safe and easy to contribute once, monthly or quarterly via the internet. Far or near, you can direct family and friends to this website and click on the Donate Now! button. And you can click right here! Check or cash donations are also welcome–just bring them to the school office in an envelope marked Peralta Fund. Be sure to indicate which Peralta student(s) you are associated with. Your donation will help their classroom win an ice cream party!

Please contact Kira Foster with questions.

VOTE – America’s Favorite School

Parents and educators know that test scores only tell one side of the story for a school. Every day in every school across the country, committed teachers, parent volunteers, student leaders and caring communities go that extra mile to make our schools the special places our children need to learn, grow and thrive.

Vote Peralta for your favorite school today and
help win $20,000!

Share Your Bounty – Bring Your Extra Fruit to Peralta

The after-school cooking classes with Ellen have started and it is always a treat to use fresh fruit grown in our own neighborhoods. If anyone has fruit trees or gardens that are producing, the cooking class will gladly accept donations. Lemons, Apples, Pears, oh my. Last year some wonderful figs and persimmons were donated and made for some tasty treats. Any extra produce is appreciated.

The cooking class is on Wednesday afternoon. If you want to donate fruits or vegetables please give them to Ellen or put them in the teacher’s lunchroom fridge (labeled) on Monday or Tuesday.

Wheels on the Wagon, Go ‘Round and ‘Round

We have new bins for the kids’ lunches and it seems more and more students are bringing lunches from home – which makes for some pretty heavy bins. With the new “Recess First” lunch campaign and an effort to make sure all lunches make it to their designated spots – these lunch bins are being moved from classroom to lunch room by way of some helpful wagon wheels.

Do you have a wagon at home that isn’t being used as often as it once was, and would love to hear the laughter of children once more by joining the ranks of the Peralta Lunch Wagon Brigade?

Walkathon Coming – Sunday, October 18

Come help with this awesome schoolwide event! The Walkathon is in need of many volunteers for the day-of (bakesale, BBQ, ticket sales, lap counters, safety and snack stations, prize distributions, registration, etc.). No Experience Necessary.

Support your kids as they do their part to support Peralta. If you would like to help and do a shift or two, please contact Cinthia Andrus, or Julianna Phillips.

Come Help Plan This Year’s Diversity Dinner!

Tuesday, September 22 | 6:30-8pm
Have you heard that this year’s Diversity Dinner is November 14? Have you heard that the Diversity Dinner is Peralta’s beloved and best NON-fundraising community building event? Have you heard that there are lots of ways – big and small – to be involved?

Come hear more and get in on the planning.
Bring your ideas, your kid(s), and a potluck dish to share.

RSVP to Kimberly Read for directions. If you can’t make the meeting and want to help out or have questions about the Dinner or the Diversity-Unity Committee in general, contact Marjorie Stamper-Kurn (510.595.5884).

Berkeley Bowl Scrip is Back – Friday Mornings Before School

Al Lujan has restocked the supply of Berkeley Bowl Scrip and he will be out on Friday mornings in the playground from 8:15 to 8:45am.

If you are new to Peralta or don’t know about scrip here’s the deal; scrip is a dollar for dollar voucher that BENEFITS the PPTG fund. You pay Al $20 dollars (or any amount in increments of $20) and you get that amount in scrip which you use at either Berkeley Bowl market. Cash or check made out to PPTG.

If you have any questions don’t hesitate to email Al or approach him before class. (He notes that he may look like a sociopath but he’s really a fluffy kitten sprayed with Love’s Baby Soft… remember that?). His daughter is Pepper in 3rd grade.

SALAD BAR- Volunteers Needed

The Salad Bar has opened but volunteers are NEEDED to keep it going. This is a PPTG full-volunteer effort.

Could the Salad Bar be the right place for you? Are you concerned about childhood obesity, diabetes and the amount of processed ‘food’ our children eat? Have you been waiting for just the right volunteer commitment? Do you wonder what happens at Peralta at lunchtime? Do you look good in a hairnet? If you answered YES – or even MAYBE/POSSIBLY – to just ONE of these questions then your time has come!

The Salad Bar is the place you need to be! Please contact Rose to get started on this wonderful adventure.

Every year BILLIONS of drink pouches & non–recyclable cookie wrappers and packaging end up in dumpsters and landfills across America.

TerraCycle, Capri Sun and Honest Kids, & Nabisco are working together to put an end to this awful loss of resources. Capri Sun and Honest Tea will donate $.02 per Capri Sun, Kool Aid and Honest Kids drink pouches and $.01 per other drink pouch you collect.
In addition, Kashi Brands has joined Terracycle and Peralta can earn $ for Kashi Packaging Recycling.

Rose Molloy has offered to help coordinate this program with another co-coordinator – please consider helping to get this program off the ground. It seems to fit in with the teachings of recycling and reusing at Peralta so well. Deb French has also offered to help both coordinators with collections and sending once it is going. Thank you.
