Assignment Letters (by mid-March)

By the middle of March you should receive a letter specifying your child's school assignment, hopefully Peralta.  According to OUSD, in 2014, 82% of kindergarten applicants received their first choice of school.  If you did not receive your choice, the initial appeal window for OUSD assignments occurs in late March; with mandatory registration in April…

School District Boundaries

More families want to send their kids to Peralta Elementary than there are spots. Admission is not guaranteed, even for families living within the Peralta school boundaries. The OUSD student assignment center controls all admissions.

Visit the OUSD Map Center & School Finder for more maps of OUSD schools and their boundaries.

How old should my child be for Kindergarten?

In 2010, California passed a new law, “The Kindergarten Readiness Act” (SB 1381), that changes the age when children are eligible to enter Kindergarten.  Under this new law children must turn 5 years old on or before September 1st of the school year in order to enroll in traditional Kindergarten.

For parents of students who turn 5 between September 2nd and December 2nd of the school year, they have priority to register for Transitional Kindergarten. Children with earlier birthdays may attend Transitional Kindergarten once all children with November, October, and September birthdays are served. Transitional Kindergarten is part of the public school system and is free to participating students.
